Facebook regularly rolls out updates to the News Feed, and in its latest change, is further combating spam and an epidemic called “like-baiting.”
Like-baiting is defined as “when a post explicitly asks News Feed readers to like, comment or share the post in order to get additional distribution beyond what the post would normally receive.”
Basically, what just about every single Facebook Page in existence currently does. It’s essentially a lazy way of gaming Edgerank to boost the reach of a post, and hopefully get it in front of more eyeballs.
According to the social network, posts that asked readers to comment, like or share were 15 percent less relevant on average.
Facebook says it now has a system in place to better detect such posts, and not allow them to get more popular than more relevant posts.
Seeing multiple shares of the same content in the News Feed, particularly photos *cough* Reddit *cough* is a common occurrence, which will also be cleaned up.
Sneaky scammers and deceptive marketers will have a harder time getting users to click-through to a website thanks to better spam detection.
Facebook clearly labels “like-baiting” as “feed spam,” and says most Pages shouldn’t be affected, other than the possibility of a small increase in reach.
