A new Twitter experiment was revealed yesterday, hinting at notifications on the web, and today the social network announced they are rolling out.
Instead of having to look over the stream or head on over to your “Notifications” or “Direct messages” tab, users can now receive real-time notifications that appear as a small pop-up on the bottom right of the screen.
The feature doesn’t work with just @ mentions or direct messages, but includes new follower notifications, when a tweet of yours has been favorited and when you’ve been retweeted.
Within the pop-up notification, you can respond directly without having to jump over to another tab.
By default, all notifications appear to be turned on, and here’s how to adjust them:
- Go to https://twitter.com/settings/
- Click on “Web notifications” on the left-hand side
- De-select the box next to notifications you’re not interested in receiving
- Don’t forget to select “Save changes”
While some users may already have web notifications, in testing on my personal account, I couldn’t get them to work.
However, Twitter says the pop-up notifications are rolling out over the coming weeks, and it’s a much needed feature that is long overdue.
