Facebook on Thursday launched a new iPhone version of its Facebook Messenger app. The new update offers free calling over Wi-Fi or cellular data connections to iPhone users located in the United States and Canada.
While the new free calling app is limited to voice calls only, Facebook users can still use Skype software for video calling via the Facebook website.
iPhone users will find the new Facebook Messenger calling feature by taping the “i” icon located in the upper right corner of the app and then selecting “free call.”
Facebook notes that the program can not be used by users logged in through the website or to landline phones.
Free calling for Google Android and RIM Blackberry users is expected to arrive in the near future. Facebook has also talked about extended the calling feature for overseas use, a move that would put the company in line with Skype and other VoIP services.
