A Facebook Digital Cupid app is here in time for Valentine’s Day, and the service has a big promise — to match you up with the Facebook friend on your list with whom you are most compatible.
Sound like Facebook’s Digital Cupid app is too good to be true? After all, unlike Bang With Friends (which simply alerts you to the friends you’d bone that would also bone you), Facebook Digital Cupid promises to reveal real compatibility … but does it stack up?
We first came to find Facebook Digital Cupid through Jezebel, and totally spoiled the surprise by reading the comments. Most users seemed to have a patchy experience at best, but out of commitment to our readers and morbid curiosity, we soldiered on.
As the official Social News Daily Facebook Digital Cupid guinea pig, I clicked the link and installed the app. (Note to not quite single, monogamish or monogamous Facebookers — if this is an intellectual experiment, make sure to make the app’s posts available only to you.)
I eagerly awaited my results as the Facebook Digital Cupid app did its thing — would it match me with my actual boyfriend? A Facebook most eligible bachelor?
Alas, no. It matched me with James, my colleague and friend — who happens to be happily married, a factor Facebook Digital Cupid apparently doesn’t take into account. Awkward. (Sorry, Heather!)
Try again? My friend Liza. My friend Maranda. My friend Rebekah. Despite operating in a largely heterosexual world, Facebook Digital Cupid has opted to match me with a married business partner and my girlfriends.
One might be expected to assume perhaps love isn’t in the cards for me, but another married male friend test-drove the app, and was matched as well. With his wife? A single female friend?
Nope. His mom.
So go ahead, give Facebook Digital Cupid a go — but don’t expect it to find you true love, unless you love your mom or James, which is just weird.
