Facebook has temporarily blocked some ads from dating sites after users complained they were seeing them too often. The dating ads will be bumped from the site until after Valentine’s Day.
The site confirmed the temporary ban to Business Insider after a frustrated ad client, Kyle McGinnis, brought the issue to their attention. McGinnis explained that his ads were running for months on Facebook until recently, when they were bumped for some reason.
Facebook explained in an email to the news site that users were complaining about seeing too many dating site ads. It added, “We recently updated our policy to require human review for ads for online dating services. We got a lot of negative feedback from people about many of these ads, and in some cases they violated various policies.”
It went on to say, “To keep the quality of ads on Facebook high, we are not currently accepting new online dating advertisers.” However, McGinnis thinks there’s another reason his ads are no longer running for HiDine, a dating site for people who like restaurants. He suggested the company is biased in favor of bigger dating sites that have larger ad budgets.
In a press release, HiDine suggested that “Facebook is edging out smaller competitors” by giving preference to larger sites. McGinnis had several ads running on the site, but was disapproved suddenly. He commented, “I am deeply disappointed in Facebook’s decision. I’m not sure how or why my status as an approved advertiser was changed. I’m also sorry to hear they can accept new partners only after Valentine’s Day.”
