An ESPN staple, Stuart Scott passed away Sunday morning after a long battle with cancer. The one of a kind sports reporter and loving father of two was known for his brave fight against the deadly disease. The 49-year-old’s death was hard news to report for his fellow co-workers. The sad news brought heavy emotions throughout the professional sports world, as Scott is remembered as an ESPN icon.

Stuart Scott was not only known for his excellent reporting and interviewing skills. He is very well known for his catchphrases, which helped him build his sports reporting career. He became known for phrases such as “boo-yah” and “cool as the other side of the pillow.” His personality and flair made a vital part of ESPN reporting, as he appealed to a type of audience that ESPN couldn’t seem to attract without him.

First diagnosed in 2007, Stuart Scott bravely fought the disease with a message of perseverance and strength. He caught the public attention after winning the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance at the 2014 ESPYs and gave an amazing speech. The speech would remain one of the most encouraging speeches in history.

The Associated Press reports, Scott leaves behind his parents, O. Ray and Jacqueline Scott; siblings Stephen Scott, Synthia Kearney and Susan Scott; his daughters Taelor, 19, and Sydni, 15; and girlfriend Kristin Spodobalski.
