It seems animals have a thing for selfies, too. We’ve had Quokka selfies, polar bear selfies, octopus selfies — now, how about an “elphie”?
One elephant all the way in Thailand seems to certainly have invented it. Christian LeBlanc, 22, is a Canadian who loves to travel with his girlfriend, and soak in the richness and beauty of their destinations. One such adventure in Thailand brought them face to face with this playful pachyderm in Koh Pangan, and it all started with a basket of bananas.
“My girlfriend and I were exploring the island when we came across a couple elephants,” he shares with CNN by email. “For 50 cents, you could buy a basket of bananas to feed them, so we decided to get one. Next thing I knew, it grabbed my GoPro by the mount and I got the selfie of a lifetime, which I can’t take full credit for.”
LeBlanc’s GoPro was set to shoot continuously, and it captured a wonderful shot of the elephant and LeBlanc with a view from its trunk. Was the elephant consciously doing it? LeBlanc isn’t sure, but he certainly isn’t ruling it out either. “Elephants are incredibly intelligent, and it definitely makes you wonder if it was a conscious action,” he shares. The GoPro shot was taken two months ago, but it soon turned viral with attention from international and social media just recently. While the world swoons over this picture, LeBlanc has moved on to bigger adventures, and bigger selfies. His most recent animal selfie involves warm Philippine waters along the coasts of Oslob, Cebu, and a whale shark, the largest species of fish in the entire world.
