Dani Alves Shuts Down Racism, Unknowingly Starts Banana Eating Twitter Trend

Dani Alves

Dani Alves is a footballer for FC Barcelona, and during a match Sunday against Villarreal, a fan threw a banana onto the field as he was about to kick.

Not dazed at all by the racist stunt, he picked up the unpeeled banana and ate it before getting right back into the game:

FC Barcelona ended up bringing home a 3-2 win, and here’s what Alves had to say:

“We have suffered this in Spain for some time. You have to take it with a dose of humour. We aren’t going to change things easily. If you don’t give it importance, they don’t achieve their objective.”

Social media quickly came out in support of Alves with hashtag #SomosTodosMacacos, also adding a dose of humor to the situation:

This isn’t the first time Dani Alves has dealt with racism, and according to a quote posted by football journalist Sid Lowe, “it’s been happening for 11 years.”
