The creator of the epic children’s book series, ‘Clifford The Big Red Dog’, Norman Bridwell has died. According to his publisher, Scholastic, Bridwell passed away on December 12 at his home in Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts at the age of 86.
Bridwell is best known for creating the children’s series which revolved around the adventures of a giant red dog named Clifford and his little girl owner, Emily.
According to Scholastic, Bridwell’s books have sold millions of copies around the world. Published in 13 different languages, there are dozens of books in the Clifford series. The books were such a hit with children that the stories were made into a PBS children’s program.
There is even a Clifford movie in the works, which is set to premier in theaters on April 8, 2016. The movie will follow the adventures of the 25-foot-tall dog and his owner. Television adaption movies have already been created, such as ‘Clifford’s Really Big Movie’, which was released in 2012.

Bridwell was also the author of lesser known works, such as “The Witch Next Door” and “A Tiny Family.”
Scholastic CEO, Dick Robinson, released a statement on Bridwell’s passing.
“Norman personified the values that we as parents and educators hope to communicate to our children – kindness, compassion, helpfulness, gratitude- through the Clifford stories which have been loved for more than 50 years.”
Bridwell leaves behind his wife, Norma, his daughter, Emily Elizabeth (Clifford’s owner’s namesake), his son, Timothy, and three grandchildren.
