Despite several deaths caused by the quest for a bigger behind, more and more women are undergoing surgery to achieve the ideal booty.
Leah Cambridge, Joy Williams, Claudia Aderotimi and Tryce Harry are just some of the women who have died chasing perfection, whether through a Brazilian bum lift, butt implants or from complications following surgery.
Leah, a 29-year-old mom-of-three from the UK, died on the operating table last August at a clinic in Turkey. She’d travelled overseas for a BBL because it was cheaper, but suffered three heart attacks during surgery after fat entered her bloodstream. While Claudia Aderotimi, also from the UK, died from a botched procedure undertaken at a US hotel back in 2011.
Then there’s Kim Kardashian super fan Jordan Parke, who contracted a flesh eating bug that left a hole in his backside.
But it looks like surgery complications and fat embolisms aren’t the only risks of a surgically-enchanced behind, as butt implants have now been linked to a rare form cancer.
Aesthetic Surgery Journal published the recent case of a woman being diagnosed with anaplastic large cell lymphoma, a cancer of the immune system cells, after receiving gluteal implants.
Although breast implants have previously been linked to the disease, this is the first time butt implants have been cited as a cause.
In the report, researchers said that the case: “helps to demonstrate that many textured implants could potentially be [a] risk [factor] for ALCL.”
The patient, a 49-year-old woman, had the textured implants fitted roughly a year before her cancer diagnosis. Doctors noticed the skin around the implants was ulcerated, with fluid accumulating around the site.
Sadly, the cancer spread, and the unnamed patient died despite months of chemotherapy.
Although the case demonstrates a link between textured implants and cancer, the researchers can’t say for sure whether the woman’s diagnosis was a result of the procedure.
Still, they hope it will make people take the risks associated with plastic surgery more seriously.
