Bryan Singer Announces ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ On Twitter

X-Men Apocalypse Bryan Singer

Bryan Singer is no stranger to using Twitter or sneak peaks and upcoming news, so it’s no surprise the director took to the social media platform on Thursday to announce X-Men: Apocalypse, coming in 2016.

Singer is currently working on X-Men: Days of Future Past, which will feature mutants from the original X-Men series and the prequel, X-Men: First Class. The sequel is expected to hit theaters on May 23, 2014.

The early announcement is a bit surprising, but given how successful the past X-Men movies have been, it appears 20th Century Fox is banking on the comic book franchise. It hasn’t been confirmed whether Singer will head up the new film, but given the fact that he made the announcement, it’s a pretty good indication that he will be directing it.

If you’re unfamiliar with the comics, Apocalypse is a major villain from them. IGN notes that he first showed up in the classic X-Factor run in the 1980s, which reunited the original five X-Men, Cyclops, Jean Grey, Angel, Beast, and Iceman. How it all ties in with Days of Future Past isn’t quite clear, but that didn’t stop fans of the franchise from having their own opinions.

While a specific release date hasn’t been set, speculation pegs X-Men: Apocalypse to hit theaters on or around May 27, 2016.
