The electronic retail giant, Best Buy, is apologizing after the company posted a tweet about the popular podcast, Serial. What was meant as a marketing tactic seem to backfire on Best Buy’s social media team.
The newly released podcast series tells the nonfiction stories of murder cases. The newest episode centers around the 1999 murder of Hae Min Lee. The teenager was allegedly murdered by her ex-boyfriend, Adnan Syed. The story delves into Syed’s trial. A heavy part of the prosecutor’s case was built on Syed calling a friend after the murder of Lee from a Best Buy pay phone. The existence of the pay phone is still highly debated. You can listen to the full podcast episode on Serial’s website.
Apparently, Best Buy thought this was marketing gold. That is, until they tweeted this joke and received a large amount of replies from the podcast’s fan base. Some were offended, some didn’t see what the big deal was.
Then there were those that thought it was the perfect time to make their own jokes.
And for the next 24 hours people remembered Best Buy still exists. #bestbuy #serial pic.twitter.com/7bXf6AHFZY

Best Buy’s tweet was quickly deleted by the retail store and an apology tweet was released.
We deeply apologize for our earlier tweet about Serial. It lacked good judgment and doesn’t reflect the values of our company. We are sorry.
