Ben Affleck was on Real Time With Bill Maher last night to promote his new movie Gone Girl but the Academy Award winning director spent most of his time arguing with the TV host about “Islamophobia.”
Affleck was offended when author Sam Harris called Islam the “mother lode of bad ideas.” The actor argued that Harris, as well as Maher, were basically saying that all people who practice Islam are terrorists since a few people who practice Islam were terrorists.
Affleck said: “You are saying that Islamaphobia is not a real thing?” he said. “It’s gross, it’s racist. It’s like saying ‘that shifty Jew…’ That’s an ugly thing to say … How about the more than a billion people who aren’t fanatical, who don’t punish women, who just want to go to school, have some sandwiches, and don’t do any of the things you say all Muslims do?”
But Maher insisted that Islam was the “only religion that acts like the Mafia.”

Affleck’s shouting match with Maher may have distracted from his promotion for Gone Girl but it doesn’t look like the movie needs much help. Gone Girl won the weekend with $38 million at the box office.
