Mattel is likely feeling the pressure to create a bald Barbie doll these days after a Facebook page was created and went viral.
The campaign was created in the hopes that Mattel would create a bald Barbie so girls who have lost hair for various reasons including cancer, alopecia or trichotillomania could be shown that bald can be beautiful.
Since launching the site has received more than 46,000 Likes on the social platform, most coming in the last few days.
The campaign, named the “Beautiful and Bald Barbie! Let’s see if we can get it made,” was launched three weeks ago and according to the page:
We would like to see a Beautiful and Bald Barbie made to help young girls who suffer from hair loss due to cancer treatments, Alopecia or Trichotillomania. Also, for young girls who are having trouble coping with their mother’s hair loss from chemo. Many children have some difficulty accepting their mother, sister, aunt, grandparent or friend going from a long haired to a bald.
According to the pages creators they sent their request to Mattel but received a form response in which Mattel said they do not take unsolicited ideas.
In the meantime the bald Barbie page has become somewhat of an unofficial “bald pride” page in which women have been showing off their bald heads and posting inspirational messages.
