A former Facebook moderator is suing the company after developing post traumatic stress disorder from watching beheading videos.
Selena Scola says the tech giant needs to do more to protect its moderators, who have to watch disturbing content including bestiality and sex abuse.
The documents say that Facebook is “failing to provide a safe workplace.”
Scola worked at the company’s California offices from July 2017 to April 2018. During this period, the employee was put under severe stress due to watching “highly toxic and extremely disturbing images.”
If Scola wins her case, Facebook’s other moderators could also file class action suits against the social network.
A spokesperson for Facebook told the Mirror: “We are currently reviewing this claim.
“We recognize that this work can often be difficult. That is why we take the support of our content moderators incredibly seriously, starting with their training, the benefits they receive, and ensuring that every person reviewing Facebook content is offered psychological support and wellness resources.
“Facebook employees receive these in house and we also require companies that we partner with for content review to provide resources and psychological support, including onsite counseling – available at the location where the plaintiff worked – and other wellness resources like relaxation areas at many of our larger facilities.”
