Zoo Under Scrutiny After Painting Donkey With Zebra Stripes To Fool Visitors

A zoo in Cairo is under a microscope after attempting to pass off a donkey painted in black and white strips as a zebra.

The animal was detected by an 18-year-old student, Mahmoud A. Sarhani, when he toured the recently-opened zoo in Cairo’s International Gardens Park last weekend.

He saw the peculiar animal, snapped some pics and posted it on the net where it went viral.

“We finished our tour then we decided to take some pictures. When we went to the zebra side, there was only one zebra,” Mahmoud stated.

“It came to us and the other one didn’t move, but when he came near to me, I realized from the first look that it was a painted donkey not a zebra.” “People might realize that from the stripes. I sure felt shocked when people phoned me and asked me about this.”

In one of the images, Mahmoud can be seen standing next to the “zebra” with a smirk on his face.

On closer examination, the differences appear to stand out much clearer. The “zebra” in the photo has lengthy floppy ears, which look more like that of a donkey’s. Zebras obtain more rounded ears that hold in an alert stance.

The animal too missed the shaggier mane a zebra typically has on the nape of its neck. Rather, it had mild tufts of jet black hair.

The third and the most noteworthy clue that proved the animal in the pic was not a zebra was its stripes. The stripes seemed smudged and strange, probably because of the heat. A zebra, on the contrary, will have distinguishable stripes that are unrivaled.

Various veterinary physicians confirmed that the animal in the photograph was not a zebra and was, as many had quizzed earlier, a donkey.

Though, even after being confronted with the proof, the Director of the International Gardens Park in Cairo has denied allegations that the animal is a donkey.
