It would be an understatement to say that the people on Twitter love the World Cup. The social network set a new record over the weekend during the Brazil vs Chile game when nearly 389,000 tweets were sent in a single minute.
According to USA Today, tweets per minute spiked after Chilean defender Gonzalo Jara missed a penalty shot, giving Brazil the victory.

The moment set a new Twitter record. Close to 389,000 tweets were sent following the penalty shot, breaking this year’s super Bowl record of 382,000 tweets per minute.
Of course, this wasn’t the only big moment of the World Cup. Earlier this month, Twitter lit up with 378,000 tweets per minute when Brazil’s Marcelo scored on his own goal.
It shouldn’t be too surprising to see some Twitter records fall during the World Cup. The social network has been the go-to source for global trash talk.
According to Twitter, more than 300 million tweets about the #WorldCup have been sent since group play began. In comparison, the 2012 Summer Olympics in London only generated 150 million tweets over the course of 16 days.
Soccer fans aren’t the only ones using Twitter during the World Cup. Several of the teams, including Team USA, have been using Twitter to interact with their fans. Coach Jurgen Klinsman even sent out a “get out of work” note last week.
