WhatsApp To Add Voice Calling In Q2 2014

WhatsApp

WhatsApp is less than a week into its major acquisition by Facebook, and today CEO Jan Koum announced it would be receiving voice capabilities very soon.

Speaking today at Mobile World Congress in Spain, Koum says it will launch in the second quarter of 2014.

This new upcoming feature is not to be confused with voice messaging, which allows WhatsApp users to send recorded messages.

Instead, users will be able to make voice calls directly through the app, bypassing their carrier and not using their minutes.

From CEO Jan Koum:

“We think we have the best voice product out there. We use the least amount of bandwidth and optimize the hell out of it.”

The voice feature will make its way to WhatsApp on iOS and Android first, with a later rollout to BlackBerry and Windows Phone devices.
