Vimeo Banned In Indonesia Due To Porn Allegations

Indonesia has banned video site Vimeo over allegations that the site hosts porn.

The Indonesian Government claims it found videos on Vimeo with names including “Art of Nakedness” and “Nudie Cutie”, which featured nudity and soft core porn.

The Ministry of Communication and Informatics Republic of Indonesia said in a statement that “we have recently received reports from the public about websites carrying negative and pornographic content… One of them is the site Vimeo.com.”

Indonesia as a country has strict rules about online pornography, but is haphazard at best in enforcing any meaningful bans of sites believed to host pornography, like most of its Northern neighbors including Thailand and Malaysia.

The country currently bans 119 sites for pornographic content…which is a veritable drop in the ocean when it comes to online pornography.

It’s not immediately clear as to the real reason why Vimeo, out of millions of pornographic websites has been targeted, however Social News Daily can report that there are number of anti-Indonesian Government videos, including some that include allegations of graft currently on the site.

We’d suggest this is far more likely the reason Vimeo has been targeted than porn.

Indonesia has a population of 247 million people, and while still a relatively poor country (by Western standards) it has an emergent economy with a rapidly increasing internet audience, which currently rates at around 71 million people.
