You just aren’t going to stop World War II veterans with a couple of “keep out” signs.

A group of WWII vets forced open the memorial on the National Mall today despite a couple of barriers, signs, and that silly government shutdown.
Tons of applause as the WWII vets from Miss. storm their memorial. Park police on the way. #shutdown pic.twitter.com/31UGU7MRry

The gridlock in congress has forced the government to shut down all non-essential programs. That means that museums, national parks, and memorials are all closed to the public.
No sign of folks leaving. The vets have control of the memorial. #shutdown pic.twitter.com/eGj4kmFEiP

Well, until a bunch of WWII vets show up.
Leo Shane III, a reporter for Stars and Stripes, was at the WWII Memorial today and watched as the veterans pushed their way through the fences to honor those who had fallen in the second world war. If you’re interested in learning more about how the government shutdown is affecting our veterans, click on over to Shane’s article. It’s a pretty good read, but honestly, his social media live reporting gets the gold medal today.

Shane said that shortly after the veterans took over the memorials several politicians arrived on the scene. He even gives a shout out to Steve King for “distracting a park officer” to help out the veterans.
Credit where due — I watched Rep Steve King distract a park police officer while vets and staffers knocked down the fences here. #shutdown

Additional Park Police eventually arrived on the scene but they didn’t even think about kicking out the veterans. Instead, they opened the gates to the public.
So, the WWII memorial is open today… Park police letting everyone by right now. #shutdown
