Twitterrific 5.2 rolled out on Tuesday and the third-party Twitter application update brought with it native push notifications. Users can now receive updates directly to their phone for new mentions, direct messages, followers, favorited tweets, and retweets.
Twitterrific allowed for push notifications in the past but it had relied on third-party service Boxcar. The third-party app has experienced issues over the last several years which appears to have soured its relationship with Twitterrific. During a December release Twitterrific ditched the Boxcar platform and spent three months without push notifications.
Twitterrific 5 developer Iconfactory is currently beta testing the new push notifications setup with a small group of 1,000 users. The access to the push notifications platform is based on a “first-come, first-served” basis.
After a user turns on push notifications they can receive those notifications on all of their Twitterrific supported devices, although notifications will need to be turned on for all of those accounts.
Iconfactory has promised to roll out the new push notifications system to more users in the “coming weeks.”
Also included with the Twitterrific 5.2 update are the following changes and bug fixes:
- Profiles redesigned to display user banners
- Discussions can now be shared via email Storify
- Droplr thumbnails now display in the timeline
- The timeline can now display up to 600 tweets (was 400)
- Various changes to make VoiceOver less verbose
- Bug fixes, UI tweaks and much more
Are you happy to see push notifications return to the Twitterrific platform?
