Twitter Takes On Storify With Custom Timelines

Twitter

Twitter has announced a new feature called custom timelines which enables users to aggregate tweets into one place around a specific topic or subject.

For example, one could cover a breaking news story or collect the most shared tweets around a hashtag.

Currently only available in TweetDeck, here’s how custom timelines work:

  • Click on the “+” icon in TweetDeck’s sidebar to add a new column, and select “Custom timeline.”
  • Similar to Twitter lists, you need to add a title and a description up to 160 characters.
  • To add tweets to a custom timeline, you simply drag and drop into the column.
  • Alternatively, you can click the more icon on a tweet, and select “Add to custom timeline.”
  • Fan of keyboard shortcuts? Once on a selected tweet, hit “C” to add it to a custom timeline.
  • To remove a tweet, simply scroll over it in the custom timeline, and click the “X” icon.
  • To share a custom timeline, click on the drop-down arrow on the column, and then the share icon.
  • Clicking “Embed timeline” will take you to Twitter.com to create a widget.
  • “View on Twitter.com” will open the custom timeline on the web, and “Tweet about timeline” lets you share the direct link.

Here’s a quick example:

!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0],p=/^http:/.test(d.location)?’http’:’https’;if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=p+”://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js”;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,”script”,”twitter-wjs”);

Twitter is competing with Storify who, unlike the social network, helps users aggregate content from multiple social networks.

Custom timelines will roll out to the TweetDeck for Windows, Chrome and web app over the next few days, and Twitter says it will also be “coming soon” to the Mac app.
