One year ago Twitter purchased the quickly growing Posterous blogging platform, on Friday the company announced plans to close down the system effective April 30.
The San Francisco based blogging platform was started with help from the Y Combinator accelerator program. In 2008 the platform emerged as what appeared to be a serious competitor in the blogging space.
Designed specifically for use on mobile devices the company’s web and mobile output failed to catch on.
Co-founder Sachin Agarwal on Friday warned customers that they needed to download or remove their data from Posterous Spaces or blogs, by April 30.
Posterous offers a specialized download tool that will automatically pull all of a users posts from the system.
In response to the closing co-founder Garry Tan has launched Posthaven, a $5 per month platform that has promised never to be purchased or accept funding.
As you can see from the screenshot posted above, the company’s homepage still shows a “sign up” form for the service, although that option does not appear to be valid at this time. Attempting to register a new account with Posterous now shows the following page:
