TweetDeck Mobile Apps For Android, iOS Will Have Their Last Chirp

TweetDeck updates its apps

TweetDeck mobile apps for Android and iOS are being euthanized by Twitter, it was reported this evening, as the company focuses on the web-based applications for the popular Twitter dashboard service.

The death of TweetDeck mobile apps was announced in a blog post Monday by TweetDeck, in which the company explained focus was shifting to browser from mobile:

We’re going to focus our development efforts on our modern, Web-based versions of TweetDeck. To that end, we are discontinuing support for our older apps: TweetDeck AIR, TweetDeck for Android and TweetDeck for iPhone. They will be removed from their respective app stores in early May and will stop functioning shortly thereafter. We’ll also discontinue support for our Facebook integration.”

So why are TweetDeck mobile apps being retired when it seems mobile apps for social media are bigger than ever? Does that mean trouble for TweetDeck?

No, the service explains — merely that user data reflects certain preferences and behaviors on mobile devices versus desktops for Twitter users and TweetDeck:

In many ways, doubling down on the TweetDeck web experience and discontinuing our app support is a reflection of where our TweetDeck power-users are going. Over the past few years, we’ve seen a steady trend towards people using TweetDeck on their computers and Twitter on their mobile devices.

TweetDeck mobile apps, the service says, are also becoming increasingly redundant as Twitter becomes more robust:

This trend coincides with an increased investment in Twitter for iPhone and Twitter for Android –– adding photo filters and other editing capabilities, revamping user profiles and enhancing search. That said, we know this applies to most of our users –– not all of them. And for those of you who are inconvenienced by this shift, our sincere apologies.

TweetDeck mobile apps will fully retire in early May, with intermittent outages until then.
