A TV helicopter jointly owned by KOMO and KING5 crashed in downtown Seattle on Tuesday morning, killing two people and injuring a third. The accident happened around 7:30 am local time and sent clouds of black smoke billowing over rush hour traffic.
The Seattle Fire Department rushed to the scene and put the flames out in half an hour, according to KIRO-7. The third person injured, a 37-year-old man, managed to free himself from a car at the scene and was taken to Harborview Medical Center in critical condition.
The accident happened at Fisher Plaza, the home of KOMO, which is located 50 yards from the base of the Space Needle. The news station explained that the copter was lifting off from the rooftop when it may have hit the side of the building and went down, hitting several vehicles on Broad Street.
Several witnesses posted photos of the helicopter crash to Twitter, showing the vehicles and the tail of the aircraft, as well as a large cloud of black smoke rising over the scene.
