This Little Pantry Lets People Leave Food and Items For The Needy

Pantry

Amid all the political insanity happening, here’s a ray of compassion and positive action.

This little pantry is making a big difference in one community’s well-being and food security.

Jessica McClard, a resident based in Lafayette, Arkansas, admired the efforts behind Little Free Libraries, and pondered about what made them such a success. “My feeling is little free structures both create space for neighborliness and address social problems,” she shared with Huffington Post.

With that said, McClard created the Little Free Pantry Initiative. these little pantries are set up to allow neighbors to leave food, hygiene goods, and other basic needs for those in need of a helping hand. Further more, these little pantries are open 24/7, so can access these in their time of need.

One pantry was set up near a school, and McClard filled those with school supplies — crayons, notebooks, pencils, and more — keeping in mind young kids who may not be able to afford these school essentials.

Mcclard started the good work, and soon, more people came and followed. Thrivent Financial funded her with $250, and this allowed her to set up her first Little Pantry near the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Fayetteville. The Facebook page now enjoys the support and cheer of over ten thousand people. It has also began to attract attention overseas, and people have started setting up Little Pantries in other locations.

McClard encourages other people to replicate the effort and copy the designs, but she also warns people to keep safe with their endeavors. On the website, not only does she give helpful tips on finding the right location to install a pantry, she also addresses challenges posed to this project by city ordinances and more.
