‘The Daily Show’ Angers One Direction Fans With Terrorist Joke

Jon Stewart has really stepped in it this time. The Daily Show host frequently infuriates politicians and pundits but he may have made a mistake when he picked a fight with one of the most feared groups of all-time: One Direction fans.

During a segment about ISIS and the never ending cycle of terrorists of groups, Correspondent Jessica Williams named the band One Direction alongside groups like Al Qaeda and the Zetas Drug Cartel.

Williams said: “Just as you were talking, a new terrorist group formed with one member each from ISIS, Al Nusra, Al Qaeda, One Direction and the Zetas drug cartel. They like to hijack planes, Jon, and take them to Cuba. They’re really taking it old school. Very vintage.”

The One Direction joke was basically an afterthought in a much larger sketch, but the Directioneers were not happy about it. They took to Twitter last night and started the hashtag #TheDailyShowGoneTooFar.

So, here’s the thing. Apparently Zayn Malik, one of the members of One Direction, is a Muslim. Fans saw the joke and felt like The Daily Show was calling Malik a terrorist because of his religious views.

Now, the Daily Show never actually mentions Zayn Malik and I’m guessing that no one on the staff actually knew that he was a Muslim. The Daily Show hasn’t responded to the anger online yet.

Here’s the sketch. Do you think #TheDailyShowGoneTooFar? Or did One Direction fans just not get the joke?
