Thanks Portugal! The United States was nearly eliminated from competition today after suffering a loss to Germany in the final round of group play. Thankfully, Portugal defeated Ghana and saved the United States from elimination.
The United States won their first game against Ghana, tied their second against Portugal, and lost their third against Germany. The US Soccer Team would have been able to secure their spot in the knockout round with a win or a tie today against the German squad but they ended up losing 0-1.
After being defeated, the United States team had to keep an eye on the Portugal – Ghana match. A Ghana win (by multiple goals) would have sent the United States home. Thankfully, Portugal was able to pull out the win.
America, getting someone else to do all the dirty work since 1776. Thanks Portugal! *releases eagles*

Today’s match wasn’t pretty but who cares. We’re moving on to the next round. In addition to thanking Portugal, Twitter also lit up with messages congratulating the US Soccer team.

Let’s hope that coach Jurgen Klinsmann hands out another “get out of work” note for that game too.
