Readmill, an independent social reading platform has been acquired by Dropbox, which has announced that it will shut down the service.
Three years ago Readmill launched as a beautiful reading experience and soon after rolled out iOS and Android versions of its platform.
Users would write about ebooks and discuss their favorite passages from across the world. They could also highlight text and create extracts, which could be shared with friends.
Previously Readmill raised a $385,000 seed round from Index Ventures, and Passion Capital, and an undisclosed Series A round from Wellington Partners and existing investors.
“As of today, it is no longer possible to create a new account, and on July 1, 2014, the Readmill app will no longer be available,” wrote David Kjelkerud and Henrik Berggren, the two co-founders of Readmill.
For the time being, users can download their ebooks and export their reading data.
The team at Readmill will be joining Dropbox, where their expertise in reading, collaboration, and syncing across devices will be put to use.
“Millions of people use Dropbox to store and share their digital lives, and we believe it’s a strong foundation on which to build the future of reading,” wrote the founders.
