Goblin Sharks are having their 15 minutes of fame today following strong social media interest in them following the publication of a photo of the rare shark.
The Goblin Shark is species of deep-sea shark that is rarely caught, and often misunderstood.
The Goblin Shark has a distinctive look with an elongated, flattened snout, and highly protrusible jaws containing prominent nail-like teeth, and grows to between 3-4 meters in length when fully grown.
Fisherman Carl Moore caught the social media famous Goblin Shark off of Key West, Florida, on April 15th completely by accident: they were fishing for shrimp (prawns) and the shark came up with the catch.
“I didn’t even know what it was,” Moore said. “I didn’t get the tape measure out, because that thing’s got some wicked teeth, they could do some damage.”
The Goblin Shark has a conservation status as “Least Concern,” but none the less it is rare to catch one, let alone by accident in this case.
The term “Goblin Shark” rated as the second most searched term on Google on the morning on May 6th.
