Social Media

Social media is still on the rise, and according to a new report from Nexgate, so is spam which increased 355 percent during the first half of 2013.

In the 2013 State of Social Media Spam Research Report, Nexgate analyzed over 60 million posts across some 25 million accounts.

15 percent of all spam contained a URL that raised a red flag, and around five percent of all social media apps are spammy.

Here were some more findings:

  • 20 percent of spammy apps can be found on a brand’s official account.
  • On average, spammers spam around 23 different social media accounts.
  • Five spammers are detected for every seven new social media accounts.
  • Facebook and YouTube are the hottest social networks for spam.
  • Ratio of spam on YouTube and Facebook to other platforms is 100 to 1.
  • Facebook has four times more phishing attacks than any other social network.
  • YouTube has the highest number of “risky content” which is defined as threats, profanity, insults, etc.
  • Ratio of “risky content” on YouTube to other social networks is five to one.
  • One out of every 200 social media posts are spam related.

Nexgate also examined how spam impacted two very well known, but undisclosed brands.

The first was a popular media and entertainment firm that managed hundreds of separate social media accounts.

On their most popular Facebook page that had around 50 million likes, one out of every seven comments was spam.

When it came to a leading sports league with around 18 million likes, one out of every four social media comments was spam.
