Skype is the preferred communications tool for hundreds of millions of people, but its Android app has been notorious for sucking up juice.
With today’s update to version 4.7, that’s all about to change. According to Skype, users can expect “aggressive battery savings.”
However, less battery impact can have a downside, particularly if you use group chats.
To significantly reduce power usage, instant notifications of messages in group chats have been turned off.
Skype says it’s still working things out, and “in the near future” this won’t be necessary.
For Android users who can’t wait for the future to get here, you can turn group message notifications back on by going to “Settings,” “Notifications,” and selecting “Sync group messages in the background.”
Here are a few other fixes added in the latest update:
- Workaround for the KitKat bug which caused a runaway process when the camera was synced in the background.
- Fix for audio and video calling on tablets that do not have Bluetooth.
- Now lists your Windows Live Messenger contacts in the Skype (default) view, not just the All contacts view.
The Android update is rolling out now, and Skype says the update will also be making its way to Kindle Fire tablets by the end of March.
