Pair Trapped In Singapore With $180K Bill After Giving Birth Early

An U.K. couple hoped to return home from Singapore with souvenirs. Though, now, a sizable medical bill has stranded them in the petite Asian country.

Patraic Walsh-Kavanaugh, 27, and Chloe Wilkinson, 30, while traveling home from Australia were on a stopover on the island. Wilkinson abruptly went into labor 6 months into her pregnancy and was hurried to a local hospital. She could not catch her flight back home because she was dilating already.

Lorcan (Irish for “fierce little one”), Wilkinson’s new baby boy, weighed just 1.9 pounds at birth but is healthy and sprouting fast. The dilemma is, since his February birth the item have been stuck with a $183K hospital bill! The two have travel insurance, however say it doesn’t cover pregnancy.

Due to Singapore’s strict laws, they can’t locate work to pay the bill off. In dire straits, the couple are resorting to a GoFundMe page to get themselves back home, as they rent a tiny room near the hospital and baby Lorcan waits in the NICU.

“We are on our own, a 14-hour flight away from our family and friends, and it has been a very difficult start to parenthood whilst Lorcan remains in hospital,” Wilkinson told reporters about their situation.

The couple’s slippery position too convoluted their intends to surprise their parents with tidings of the pregnancy after getting back to the U.K. Well – the cat’s out of the bag now!

As of Thursday morning, the pair have raised more than $70K toward their aim. Whether they raise all the cash they necessitate or not, the couple expect to stay 3 months in Singapore as Lorcan develops his strength – way longer than the two-day stop they planned initially.
