Shia LaBeouf is retiring from “public life” in light of “recent attacks against my artistic integrity.” The actor-turned-director made the announcement on his Twitter account in an apparent reference to a cease and desist letter he received earlier this week, as well as several other incidents involving the film HowardCantour.com.
The short film was LaBeouf’s directorial debut, but several viewers pointed out shortly after it was released that the movie was a rip off of Daniel Clowes’ graphic novella Justin M. Damiano.
Shia initially apologized for the apparent plagiarism in several ways, from writing “I fucked up” on Twitter to a personal apology to Clowes via skywriting. But the apologies didn’t appear to be enough, considering Clowes’ legal representative sent him a cease and desist letter.

After spending a day away from Twitter, possibly to decide the best course of action in light of the letter, Shia LaBeouf posted Friday morning:
In light of the recent attacks against my artistic integrity, I am retiring from all public life.
