If you visit Twitter today and check out Twitter trends you’ll see the hashtag #SenateMustAct. That hashtag is being used to attack ObamaCare and talk about defunding the program before it goes live in 2014.
While Republican leaders created the hashtag to reach their constituency it quickly turned into yet another example of useless internet trolling.
We understand that hashtags are a great way to generate certain conversations but their is still no ownership of those tags and in the end they can generate a bunch of confusing and nasty noise.
Here are a few back and forth examples from this weeks #SenateMustAct trend.
The first few Tweets were naturally in support of defunding ObamaCare:
Just cast my vote to defund ObamaCare and keep the government open. Now the #SenateMustAct pic.twitter.com/6vOHfsei7O

Just voted to defund Obamacare and protect Houstonians from this train wreck. Now the #SenateMustAct — John Culberson (@CongCulberson) September 20, 2013
The conversation was then quickly co-opted by ObamaCare supporters and Republican hating Twitter users:
Fact Republicans democrats both suck. They should let the government shut down #SenateMustAct — Jairo Gerardo (@Jairo_Gerardo) September 20, 2013

See how quickly the #SenateMustAct hashtag turned into a GOP smashing troll platform?
Back before social media politicians appeared on TV and attempted to control the flow of information they were delivering. Today a single Senator can create a Twitter trend that can quickly turn on them.
Stopping using Twitter hashtags to delivery your political message, it is going to be co-opted to attack your message.
