Thanks to Facebook’s new trending stories tool, we were able to see that Roe v. Wade — the Supreme Court’s landmark decision legalizing abortion in America — was a hot topic on its 41st birthday.
Back in 1973, the Roe v. Wade decision created a massive political fissure in America that remains to this day. Few issues are as black and white as abortion in this country, with a “middle ground” present in other hot-button topics like even gun control notably absent.
It’s been more than 40 years since Roe v. Wade kicked off the debate on a new battleground, and both sides of the issue have evolved within the boundaries created by the legal ability to terminate a pregnancy.
Social media has also influenced the way we talk about abortion in the US. While the subject was loudly taboo in old media by and large, social has somewhat demystified the discussion. The ability of sites like Facebook to forge connections has meant more women speaking up on both sides, sharing stories that had heretofore had no platform to be heard.
But on the Roe v. Wade anniversary today, it was largely politicians affirming their stances on the matter who trended big on Facebook, on both sides:
