To celebrate the frozen hell most of America is calling a “Polar Vortex,” a Twitter trend of throwing boiling water into the tundra outside has troublingly emerged — and surprisingly, it turns out chucking burning substances around is not actually a good way to have fun or learn about science.

I know what you’re thinking. But Kim, how can upending a pot of water into a windy, volatile and unforgiving frozen landscape possibly turn out wrongly? Surely the experiment can only end with magical snowflakes falling around us in a Pinterest-worthy display of winter wonderment.

We here at Social News Daily would like to spare you the effort, potential injury, disappointment, and blindness that could result from tossing boiling water about the place because — did we mention it’s really windy basically everywhere?

This winter already sucks. This arctic cold snap sucks. Everything about it sucks, it’s the worst, and the only activities to which anyone can look forward to having fun doing between now and March involve hopefully not slipping and breaking something and internet schadenfreude.

But in case you missed it, BuzzFeed found the original “throw boiling water into the winter air” tweet and its inevitable less-successful fellows, involving all manner of cool result as well as the hours-long experience of suffering through a burn. Which, in fairness, is something to do while you’re snowed in.

It looks like this dumbass started it:

And this happened:

TLDR: If you throw boiling water into the snow and freezing wind, it will also turn to snow sometimes — even though the ground is covered in it so we don’t need more — and it will very likely shoot back into your face and hurt really bad. Go watch Netflix instead.
