President Obama Becomes First POTUS To Moderate Reddit AMA

Obama still proves he's got social-media chops

It’s both a historical and a social-media first: Today, President Barack Obama became the first sitting president to moderate an AMA (ask me anything) on Reddit.

Obama’s AMA is important for two reasons: one, it confirms Reddit’s mainstream success and reach while also increasing their visibility, and two, it shows that President Obama fully understands how important social media engagement is for young voters.

Redditers took full advantage of the AMA, with some throwing the POTUS hard questions while others kept it light. President Obama talked about the economy, the military presence in Afghanistan, and touched on young people’s difficulty in finding jobs these days.

In what amounts to s surprise to no one, President Obama confirmed that his favorite basketball player is Michael Jordan, and that he is “a Bulls guy.” Chicago solidarity!

Obama’s AMA chat lasted about an hour and was so popular that it shut Reddit down during his post. President Obama’s social-media resume is a little bit more complete after hosting the AMA. He previously hosted the very first Twitter Town Hall on July 6th after joining the popular micro-blogging website.
