Finding out your pregnant can be a shock. Discovering that you are pregnant with quadruplets, even more shocking. What about discovering you are pregnant with quadruplets at the age of 65? It was a reality for one German mother.
Berlin schoolteacher, Annegret Raunigk is already a mother of 13 children, ranging from 9 to 44. As she plans to retire soon, she is now preparing for another round of motherhood.
Raunigk tells the media she decided to get pregnant again after her nine-year-old told her she wanted a younger sibling. Her decision has been met with sharp criticism from the medical community, after all a pregnancy at her age could be a risk for her and her unborn babies.
“Any pregnancy of a woman over age 45 has to be considered a high-risk pregnancy; over 60 this is naturally extreme,” Dr. Holger Stepan, head of obstetrics at the University of Leipzig.”The 65-year-old body is definitely not designed to carry a pregnancy, not of one child and certainly not of quadruplets.”
She is quick to defend her actions and says her age should mean nothing in her quest to become a mother again.
“How does one have to behave at 65? They can see it how they want to,” she said, “and I’ll see it the way I think is right.”
After several unsuccessful attempts, Raunigk became pregnant by donated eggs that were fertilized and implanted in a clinic outside of Germany.
