The checker flag no longer waves over the North Wilkesboro Speedway in North Carolina. The one bustling racetrack now sits abandoned and decaying.

Daily Mail UK photojournalist, Seph Lawless captured some eerie photos of the current state of the once NASCAR.hot spot.

Opening in 1949, the track was used for many of the top professional races. NASCAR decided to close the doors in September 1996.

In 2010, North Wilkesboro Speedway reopened for several stock car racing events, but it wasn’t enough to save the fading track. The doors were once again closed 2011, and have remained empty for the next four years.

Lawless’ photos show the crumbling state of the racetrack. The cracked asphalt, the rusting signs, peeling paint and destroyed ceilings. His interesting photos are part of a bigger project that focus on the ‘most abandoned’ places in America.

An organization named ‘Save the Speedway’, founded in 2005 by Rob Marsden, still actively fights for the reopening of the track.
