Ozzy Osbourne might be seen as nothing more than a fading reality TV star to the current generation, but in his heyday he was a true hell-raiser. Christian groups across the country protested his music as “demonic,” in 1982 he bit the head off a live bat, and in that same year he took a lot of flak from proud Texans when he urinated on The Alamo building in San Antonio.
The Alamo is the site of a crucial battle during the Texas Revolution, and the place legendary folk heroes like David Crockett, Jim Bowie and William Travis met their end at the hands of Mexico’s Antonio López de Santa Anna. It’s hallowed ground for Texans, but a drunk Ozzy apparently found it a good enough place for a quick whiz.
The website Ultimate Classic Rock tells the story of the aftermath:
“Osbourne was arrested for public urination and intoxication. He was reportedly released on a $40 bond, which was posted by Jack Orbin, who was promoting Osbourne’s concert at the HemisFair that night. However, the concert was marred by fans who threw rocks because they were unable to get into the sold-out show. Twenty-four people were arrested for their part in the riot.
“The combination of the two events caused Osbourne to be banned from San Antonio by the city council. Ten years later, Osbourne was pardoned after he donated $10,000 to the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, who maintain and manage the Alamo — one of the most popular tourist attractions in Texas.”
On Thursday, Osbourne returned to San Antonio while filming a documentary with The History Channel. No word yet on whether it’s about aliens or pawn shops, but we’ll keep you posted.
Osbourne met with several city officials and, according to his tour guide, “barely said a word” while being taken around the Mission’s grounds.
