The NYPD is hoping to create closer connections with their communities by utilizing social media to connect with people.
According to police sources, commissioner Bratton plans on rolling out Twitter accounts to every precinct in the city.
The pilot project will intially be tested out by a small group of commanders from the 83, PSA 6, 106, 25, and 112th precincts. Their commands consist of neighborhoods such as Harlem, Forest Hills, Ozone Park, Rego Park, and Bushwick.
Sources say the NYPD hopes the twitter initiative will help it forge closer connections with their communities.
The contents that tweets can include and the guidelines surrounding what police can tweet is still in consideration.
Last year, Deputy Inspector Jeffrey Schiff was silenced by the NYPD when he used the social network to warn residents about career criminals returning from prison to Cobble Hill, Red Hook, and Carroll Gardens.
Tweets from the NYPD were constrained to the department’s official handle, @NYPDNews.
Not surprisingly, a few of the ex-cons who Schiff warned the public about were rearrested for committing similar crimes.
