Twitter may have its fair share of nonsensical tweets, but yesterday users banded together to help raise money for cancer research charities.
The results? At least for Cancer Research UK, in just 24 hours it “unexpectedly” received over 800,000 text message donations.
It all started with #NoMakeupSelfie, which kicked off Tuesday and was originally in support of actress Kim Novak who was criticized over her looks.
However, the hashtag quickly took on a life of its own after Twitter users began associating it with cancer awareness
Cancer Research UK caught on to the trend, posting the following tweet:
We’re loving your #cancerawareness #nomakeupselfie pics! The campaign isn’t ours but every £ helps #beatcancersooner pic.twitter.com/nNb0RSEitr

The fundraising stretched far beyond Cancer Research UK, and similar charities and users in support of those charities also got involved:

It’s hard telling just how much money was raised for cancer research on Twitter, and judging by all the tweets still flying in, it’s not going to end anytime soon.
