It’s been five years since the most recent novel in the Millennium series hit shelves in the US — and more than a decade since author Stieg Larsson passed away — but 2015 will see a new entry in the continuing adventures of Lisbeth Salander.
The book will be written by David Lagercrantz, apparently not using any source material from Larsson other than the contents of the previous three books. Larsson was thought to have plans for a further seven novels in the series ahead of his death, but his notes and ideas don’t seem to be the basis of this new novel.
More than 75 million copies of the Millennium series have been sold thus far, and it’s expected that this fourth entry could be the most successful yet. Comparisons have been made to the impact of The Da Vinci Code — the book will release in August, making it a perfect summer read for vacationers.
However, it’s unclear whether readers will be put off by the change in author. Fans have long wanted to see what Larsson had planned for the series beyond its third entry, but the fact that his work isn’t going to be used has already caused some disappointment amongst the most dedicated of his fanbase.
That being said, the masses will likely not be perturbed by the change. Lagercrantz is best known for his ghostwritten biography of professional soccer player Zlatan Ibrahimovic, so he’s well-versed in writing in the style of someone else.
Larsson’s widow, however, isn’t keen on the plans — she remains in possession of her late husband’s notes for the future of the Millennium series, but was famously locked out of the money made from the release of the books as a result of a loophole in Swedish law.
The fourth book in the Millennium series will reportedly be titled ‘That Which Does Not Kill Us’ and is set to release in August 2015.
