Ronald McDonald is an iconic mascot known worldwide, and McDonald’s is now taking him out of the PlayPlace into the social media trenches.
Yesterday, the fast food chain issued a press release highlighting its new initiative, and vision for good ol’ Ronald.
Ronald McDonald will now be active on the company’s various social media accounts, and will interact directly with fans and followers using hashtag #RonaldMcDonald.
From Global Relationship Officer Dean Barrett:
“Ronald brings to life the fun of our brand by connecting with customers around the world, whether he’s promoting literacy or spreading cheer at a Ronald McDonald House. Customers today want to engage with brands in different ways and Ronald will continue to evolve to be modern and relevant.”
Part of this mission beyond social media to be more modern is also an updated look to get with the times. Now, Ronald can be seen in cargo pants and a vest (pictured above), both keeping with the original red and yellow colors.
However, he’s not getting a fresh pair of Jordans, and will continue wearing the bright red clown shoes.
McDonald’s actually tasked theatrical designer Ann Hould-Ward to help create the new look, and she said it “was one of the highlights of my career.”
Will Ronald McDonald start snapping selfies? Start a Twitter feud with the Burger King? I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
