Magic Johnson ‘Couldn’t Be Happier’ To See Mike D’Antoni Resign

Magic Johnson didn’t mince words when he heard that Mike D’Antoni was resigning. Instead of issuing a phony statement saying that the Lakers coach did a great job over the last few seasons and that he wished him well on future endeavors, the NBA legend took a more direct route.

Johnson said that he “couldn’t be happier” to see D’Antoni leave his beloved Lakers.

Johnson has been a vocal critic of D’Antoni since he took over the team. Those criticisms were largely validated this year when D’Antoni led the Lakers to their worst season (27-55) since 1960.

Still, you’d think that someone as prominent as Magic Johnson would show D’Antoni at least a little respect.

Like General Manager Mitch Kupchak, who said: “Given the circumstances, I don’t know that anybody could have done a better job than Mike did the past two seasons … On behalf of the Lakers, we thank Mike for the work ethic, professionalism and positive attitude that he brought to the team every day. We wish him the best of luck.”

Are you surprised that Magic Johnson blatantly celebrated the demise of coach Mike D’Antoni? Charles Barkley was.

Barley said: “Magic Johnson’s bigger than that … Listen, Mike D’Antoni is a good coach. They didn’t give him a lot to work with. But Magic Johnson, he’s bigger than that.”
