Social deals platform LivingSocial was hacked over the weekend and the accounts for 50 million users were affected by the breach.
The breach allowed hackers to gain access to names, email addresses, encrypted passwords and, in some cases, date of birth.
LivingSocial was quick to point out that all passwords are encrypted with hashing and salting methods. Customer credit card data was not affected by the attack as that information is stored on separate servers.
Company CEO Tim O’Shaughnessy told employees in an internal memo:
“LivingSocial recently experienced a cyber-attack on our computer systems that resulted in unauthorized access to some customer data from our servers. We are actively working with law enforcement to investigate this issue. We need to do the right thing for our customers who place their trust in us, and that is why we’re taking the steps described and going above and beyond what’s required. We all need to work incredibly hard over the coming days and weeks to validate that faith and trust.”
The data breach arrives just one month after LivingSocial Chief Technological Officer Aaron Battalion left his position with the social deals company.
