Joan Rivers, known for her brash brand of humor and loose (but augmented) lips, may have made a comical faux pas when she appeared on TODAY.
While describing cohabitation with her daughter Melissa, Joan Rivers candidly made a joke comparing her daughter’s guest room to Ariel Castro’s basement – which has since left a little scorched earth on the Twitter-verse.
Reporters on TODAY met with Joan Rivers, 80, and her daughter Melissa to discuss what life for them is like living under the same roof for their reality show, “Joan and Melissa: Joan Knows Best?”

During the interview Joan made a distasteful comparison between her living arrangements to the enslaved victims of Ariel Castro. “Those women in the basement in Cleveland had more space. It is just the worst,” and followed with “too soon?” when anchor Al Roker appeared visibly shocked by her bold statement.

For anyone unaware of the reference, Ariel Castro was taken into custody after it was discovered in May 2013 he’d kidnapped and enslaved three women.
The victims, Michelle Knight, Amanda Berry, and Georgina “Gina” DeJesus, were held against their will inside a residence on Seymour Avenue in Cleveland, Ohio for nearly a decade.
Castro later pled guilty to over 900 criminal counts of rape, kidnapping, and aggravated murder as part of a plea bargain. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison without the chance of parole plus 1,000 years. Yet, one month into his sentence, Castro committed suicide by hanging himself with bed sheets in his prison cell.
