Jimmy Buffett wants a raise.
The main Parrot Head and “Cheeseburger In Paradise” singer asked Daniel Ek, chief executive of Spotify, for a raise during a Q&A session at the Vanity Fair New Establishment Summit.
Buffett said: “Do you see anything in your future where we might get a raise directly from you as opposed to going through the bulls–t you have to go through to deal with a label these days?”
Jimmy Buffett has had a pretty successful career and probably isn’t hurting too much from Spotify. But new artists? The singer said that the streaming service made it difficult for new artists to make money.
Buffett said: “How the stream of revenue gets to the artists, particularly young and struggling artists, is hard to understand now … Most of it doesn’t get to the artist.”
Spotify says that it pays out 70% of revenues as royalties. How that money gets distributed, however, depends on the artists and the record company.
Ek said that Spotify is committed to transparency and added that the company is working on a way to better explain the financial benefits of streaming to new artists.
