Actor and comedian Jim Carrey has made a mini side-career out of his anti-gun activism, so it’s a little strange that he went out of his way to post an apology to assault rifle owners on Twitter over the weekend.
Seemingly out of nowhere, Carrey posted the following two tweets on Sunday:
Asslt rifle fans,I do not agree wth u,nor do I fear u but I do love u and I’m sorry tht in my outrage I called you names.That was wrong. 3^{
— Jim Carrey (@JimCarrey) July 7, 2013
Btw I don’t need a crisis mgr, just a conscience. Calling ppl names is inappropriate but my position on assault weapons hasn’t changed. ;^} — Jim Carrey (@JimCarrey) July 7, 2013
Though he didn’t mention anything specific, Carrey entered the gun debate pretty aggressively in March, calling gun control opponents “heartless motherf–kers.”
‘Cold Dead Hand’ is abt u heartless motherf%ckers unwilling 2 bend 4 the safety of our kids.Sorry if you’re offended… https://t.co/ibUJm2loYI — Jim Carrey (@JimCarrey) March 24, 2013
Hey, he said he was “sorry” then, too. He also called gun rights activists “maniacs” shortly after the Aurora massacre of 2012:
My love to the victims in Colorado. The kid ws sick bt u who can still support automatic weapon sales r the real maniacs in this country. — Jim Carrey (@JimCarrey) July 21, 2012
But Jim Carrey’s harsh rhetoric has been answered with harsher criticism, causing the actor to defend himself almost relentlessly and, in our opinion, slowly excuse himself from the conversation. Still, his apology has been met with a mixed reaction. Not letting it go:
What is an “Assault Rifle” Jim? #nra #tcot @JimCarrey — Robertt Johnsonn (@robertjpatriot) July 7, 2013
@JimCarrey There’s no such thing as an ‘assault rifle’ fan. That’s a made up word. You’re a victim of liberal media propaganda. — Ken Webster Jr (@ProducerKen) July 7, 2013
@JimCarrey I like how you think we care, but I still won’t be supporting your career any more than you support mine. — Voltage Technician (@robcolbert) July 7, 2013
Shorter @JimCarrey “My career is tanking…Forgive me please” — S.M (@redsteeze) July 7, 2013
Probably already agreed with Jim Carrey:
@Rasmus_56 @JimCarrey it is never too late to apologize. — Eric Himan (@RealEric_Himan) July 8, 2013
@EricMorris1616 @JimCarrey Please be respectful of Jim, I know that’s hard for a Republican to do!
— M (@MigMags) July 8, 2013
Conspiracy:
@RealEric_Himan @JimCarrey LOL, good man? He made the comments months ago, apology only now, which coincides with his movie release. #fail

What do you think of Jim Carrey’s Twitter apology to assault rifle owners? Sincere, long overdue, or completely un-needed? Sound off!
